Goals! Dreams! Aspirations! Have you ever stopped and thought about what have I accomplished in the past five years, this year or even today? You remember all of the to-do lists that you have not completed along with the New Year’s resolutions made and not achieved or even started. How do you end this cycle? By starting a routine today. Do not wait for the right time, make the time.
At the end of your day take some time to think about what you did. Get a small notebook and write down what your day entailed. How do you feel about your day? Did you accomplish what you set out to do? Should you have done more?
Now it is time for you to be intentional. Before you go to sleep, plan for tomorrow. Make notes of what you need to accomplish. Put it on the calendar in your cell (or whatever technology you use). When you wake up review what you have set in place and go for it. Start your day with the determination to complete everything you have set out to do.
Practice this every evening and morning. Nothing is perfect and you may have to deviate from what you have set up. But, do your best to stick to your plans for the day and do not waste time. When you plan you will accomplish more. Set timelines and stick to them.
When appointments are made put the information on your calendar immediately. Set reminders. Check your calendar weekly or even daily to make sure new plans do not interfere with the ones already set in place.
Set long-term goals by documenting what you want to accomplish, how you are going to accomplish it, and a time frame of when you want to accomplish it. Put this somewhere you can see it as a constant reminder. Then make incremental steps to reach that goal by the time expected. For example, when you have a term paper or project make a timeline with the task in the order of what needs to be completed to meet the deadline. As another example, you would like to buy a house in the future. Think about the kind of house you want, consider the size and location. Check the cost of houses currently on the market for sale. Then figure out how much money you need for a down payment. Set smaller goals in place to help you reach the larger goals.
DO NOT GIVE UP! It may seem the goal is impossible to achieve. You have been attempting for years and it appears you are in the same position you were when you first set the goal, but BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. Know what steps you need to take. WRITE THEM DOWN… REVIEW THEM… and TAKE ACTION! Also, tell someone about the goal (someone you can trust and will help you be accountable). Let them know what you are planning to accomplish. This will help you because more than likely this person will ask you how it is coming along. Which in turn will cause you to work a little harder at acquiring your goal.
